In Mob Psycho 100 “Shigeo Kageyama is an average middle school boy, nicknamed Mob (モブ Mobu) (meaning “background character”) for lacking a sense of presence”. This is how things appear on initial viewing. The writers intentionally attempt to make Mob a blank canvas while making the characters around him colour his actions and perceptions. Mob represents the average anime viewer. While watching this show i found myself projecting myself onto him and his situations ; i found the romantic situations or the lack there of to be of particular interest.
Reigen Arataka is the second main character. Equally interesting as Mob, he is a seasoned conman. over the seasons he as actually become more and more like the person he skillfully projects. This is where Mob Psycho shows its greatest strengths in character development. Reigen is at first shown to be an uncaring conman. Over time he becomes a father figure for Mob and a much more sympathetic and likeable character. He also develops his psychic powers enabling him to see low level spirits.
The final of the trio is likely the most interesting, Dimple is a an evil spirit which mob failed to exercise. He however sticks with Mob and the two become friends even developing trust between one another.
Mob Psycho 100 is a brilliant anime with some of the most spectacular animation ive ever seen. The art style is simple enough to ensure fluent action scenes but still detailed enough to impress during the static scenes. Under the hood of all this beauty however is the core character progression. The audience is lifted high everytime Mob its 100%. This counter is vital not only to the story but the character progression aswell. The counter represents Mob filling with emotion. every time his emotions “explode” it represents him overcoming some personal blockade in his life.
